HS Codes (Global)

Harmonized System (HS) codes are the global standard used to classify goods in import and export transactions. HS provides a consistent 6-digit base classification that’s recognized across countries. Many countries extend HS with additional digits to reflect local requirements (for example: tariff rules, reporting, or statistical needs).

HTS Codes (United States)

Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes are the U.S. implementation built on top of HS. In practice, HTS codes start with the HS 6-digit base and then add additional digits to get more specific for U.S. customs and trade compliance workflows.
Rule of thumb HS is the global 6-digit base. HTS is the U.S. extension used for imports into the United States.

Where to use HS/HTS codes

HS/HTS codes are required when importing or exporting goods and must be included on key trade documents such as:
  • Commercial invoices
  • Bills of lading
  • Customs declarations
  • Export declarations
  • Import and export licenses
In addition, codes are commonly used for:
  • Conducting market research and accessing relevant trade statistics
  • Verifying applicable laws for exports
  • Estimating duty rates and eligibility for special programs or free trade agreements
Selecting the correct HS/HTS code is crucial. Inaccurate classification can result in delays, fines, penalties, or even seizure of goods. The HTS API can help you narrow down the closest match quickly, but you should always validate classifications with a qualified customs broker or trade compliance professional.
